AI Novel Writing Tools: Pricing Compared (2026)

Every pricing page on this list is accurate. Most of them are also useless, because they quote a monthly fee for a product you use in bursts.

You do not draft evenly across a year. You draft hard for three months, stop, revise for two, come back. So the number that matters is not what a tool costs per month. It is what it costs to get one novel out of it.

The unit that actually matters

Chapters generated by AI tend to land near 2,000 words each. A novel holds 30 to 40 of them. Drafting one book therefore means 30,000 to 40,000 words of generation before you regenerate a single scene.

That number is what separates these tools. On a flat plan it changes nothing. On a credit plan it decides your tier. What one credit buys matters as much as how many you get.

Three billing models. Each punishes someone different

Credits. Most novel tools work this way, FeelyWrite included. What differs is what one credit buys. FeelyWrite counts requests: one draft, one rewrite, one brainstorm or one chat message is one credit. A request that fails gives its credit back. Plans carry 100, 400 or 1,200 actions a month. FeelyWrite recommends its $19 Author plan for drafting a full novel.

Sudowrite's credits vary with the task, the AI model and how much context goes in. Its own documentation says there is no way to predict how many a feature will use. The $19 tier carries 225,000 credits, which sounds enormous until you regenerate a scene eight times looking for the right one. Most novelists drafting a full book land on the $29 tier rather than the $19 one, so treat $29 as the real entry price. Squibler and Type.ai are credit-based too: Squibler's $29.99 Plus plan carries 10,000 credits a month, with unlimited use only on the $89.99 Pro plan.

Bring your own key. Novelcrafter's model, the one most often misread. Its cheapest plan, at $4, leaves AI out entirely. From the $8 Hobbyist tier upward you plug in your own OpenAI or Anthropic account, which then bills you directly. A heavy drafting month commonly adds $15 to $30. Real cost lands nearer $25, plus the setup.

Flat. The general chat assistants charge $20 a month with no credits to count. None of them is built around a manuscript.

None of these models is dishonest. They just fail differently. Credits punish your heaviest month. Bring-your-own-key punishes people who do not want a second bill. Flat pricing punishes light users, who subsidize heavy ones.

Cost to draft one novel

Rough, assuming a three-month drafting run at moderate volume.

The spread between cheapest and dearest is roughly ten times, for tools doing broadly the same job. That is worth ten minutes before you subscribe.

What the price does not tell you

Three things cost nothing on a pricing page and matter enormously.

Whether export is free. Several tools reserve export formats for higher tiers. Ours is free on every plan, including the free one, in five formats. Check it before committing a manuscript anywhere. Locked-in text is the one mistake here you cannot undo later.

Whether the memory is included or extra. Story DNA is on every FeelyWrite tier. On some tools the equivalent feature is gated above the entry plan, which quietly moves the real price up a tier.
