How Many Words Is a 200-Page Book?

Roughly 50,000 to 60,000 words, using a standard paperback trim with typical typesetting.

The range is wide because a page is not a property of your manuscript. It is a property of how someone decided to print it. Five separate decisions move the number.

The short answer, by format

FormatWords per page200 pages is
Mass market paperback300 to 35060,000 to 70,000
Trade paperback (6x9)250 to 30050,000 to 60,000
Trade paperback (5.5x8.5)250 to 28050,000 to 56,000
Hardcover250 to 30050,000 to 60,000
Large print150 to 20030,000 to 40,000
Double-spaced manuscript25050,000

That last row is the one to memorize if you deal with agents. A standard manuscript page is 250 words: double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman or Courier, one-inch margins. It has been the convention for decades precisely so everyone can estimate the same way.

The five things that move it

Trim size. A 6x9 page holds noticeably more than a 5x8. This is the single biggest factor, chosen at layout rather than at writing.

Font and point size. 11pt Garamond fits far more on a page than 12pt Times. Garamond also runs visually smaller at the same nominal size, so two books both set "12pt" can differ by 15%.

Leading, meaning line spacing. Tight leading fits more lines. It also reads denser, which is why literary presses often loosen it deliberately.

Margins. Wider margins look more expensive and cost you pages.

Dialogue density. This one is invisible in any calculator and matters enormously. A page of rapid dialogue might hold 120 words, because every new speaker starts a new line and most lines end early. A page of unbroken description holds 350. A dialogue-heavy romance can run 40% more pages than a description-heavy novel at identical word count.

So two 60,000-word novels can differ by fifty printed pages. Neither is wrong.

Going the other direction

If you have a word count and want pages, divide.

`` pages = words / words-per-page for your format ``

At 300 words per page, an 80,000-word novel is about 267 pages. At 250 it is 320. Both are normal-looking books. If you want the target itself rather than the conversion, the length guides cover what each genre expects.

And for the question people actually type: 200 words is most of one double-spaced manuscript page, or about two-thirds of a printed paperback page.

Why this matters for self-publishers

If you print on demand, page count is money. Unit cost scales with pages almost linearly, so the typesetting choices above change your margin on every copy sold.

Practical consequences:

  • A tighter trim and font can drop a 340-page book to 290 with no change to the text.

  • Below about 100 pages, paperback binding gets awkward and the spine cannot carry a readable title.

  • Above about 700 pages, print cost rises sharply and some print services impose limits.

None of this applies to ebooks, where "pages" render from the reader's own font settings and change per device. That is one reason every plan here includes export in both fixed and reflowable formats. When you export to EPUB, page count stops existing as a fixed number.

The honest method

If you want the real number rather than an estimate:

  1. Typeset one chapter in the exact trim, font and spacing you plan to use.

  2. Count the words in it. Count the pages it produced.

  3. Divide. That is your words-per-page, for this book.

  4. Divide your total by it.

Ten minutes, beating any general table including the one above, because it uses your dialogue density and your typesetting rather than an average of everyone's.

Questions writers ask

How many words is a 200-page book?

About 50,000 to 60,000 in a standard trade paperback. Exactly 50,000 if you mean 200 double-spaced manuscript pages.

How many pages is 50,000 words?

Around 170 to 200 printed pages, or exactly 200 double-spaced manuscript pages.

How many words per page?

250 for a double-spaced manuscript. 250 to 350 for a printed book, depending on trim, font and how much dialogue you write.

How many pages is 200 words?

Just under one double-spaced page, or roughly two-thirds of a printed page.

Is a 200-page book too short for a novel?

For adult fiction, 50,000 to 60,000 words is on the short side. It is normal for middle grade, category romance and novellas.

Why do page counts differ between editions?

Different trim, font and spacing. The text is identical. Hardcover and mass market editions of the same book routinely differ by a hundred pages.

Do ebook page counts mean anything?

Not really. They are calculated from a nominal page size and shift with the reader's font choices. Use word count for anything that matters. ---
