Novel vs Book: What's the Difference?

Every novel is a book. Not every book is a novel.

A book is a container. A novel is a form that goes inside it. Cookbooks, biographies, poetry collections and instruction manuals are all books. None are novels.

That is the entire answer. What follows is the part that actually matters, which is when the distinction changes what someone expects of you.

The test

A novel is book-length fiction with a continuous narrative. Three conditions, all required.

Apply all three and the edge cases resolve.

A 250-page poetry collection is a book. Not a novel, no continuous narrative. A 35,000-word invented story is a novella. A memoir reading exactly like a novel is still not one, because it claims to be true.

Why the word matters

Two places where getting it wrong costs you.

Querying an agent. Calling your work a "book" in a query is a small tell. Agents represent novels, memoirs, or non-fiction. Each has a different submission process. Precision signals you know the field.

Setting reader expectation. Someone who buys a novel expects a story they can follow start to finish. Someone who buys a book of linked stories expects something else. Mislabeling produces reviews that are really complaints about the label rather than the work.

The forms by length

The 40,000 line is the common convention and it is a convention, not a law. Commercially, most adult genres expect considerably more than the minimum.

The tricky cases

Linked short stories. Same characters, same world, separate stories. Usually sold as a collection rather than a novel, though publishers sometimes market them as "a novel in stories" when the arc is strong enough.

Novel-in-verse. A continuous narrative told in poems. Genuinely a novel by the three conditions above, common in young adult.

Autofiction. Invented enough to be fiction, drawn from life closely enough to be uncomfortable. Sold as a novel.

Graphic novel. The naming is doing marketing work. It is book-length continuous narrative in comics form, which arguably makes it a novel by the test above and definitely makes it its own category in practice.

Serial fiction. Published in installments. Whether it is a novel depends on whether the whole thing is one continuous narrative, not on how it was released.

Related words people mix up

Manuscript. Your book before it is a book. Any unpublished work in draft form.

Title. Publishing jargon for a single published product. "We publish 40 titles a year" means 40 books.

Work. Deliberately neutral, covers anything. Useful when the form is unclear.

Volume. One physical book, particularly one part of a set. A trilogy is three volumes.

Once your manuscript is finished, the distinction stops being theoretical: a novel gets exported and formatted as one continuous text, where a collection is assembled from separately titled pieces.
